Why Are So Many Online Recipes Free?
It is a puzzle, indeed. With millions of dollars made by dozens of publishers every year, why is there such a wealth of online recipes free of charge? Are these people crazy?
A large number of those recipes are posted on personal or fan pages just out of the goodness of the writers' hearts. For true kitchen wizards, the only thing more satisfying than creating a great new dish is getting the praise from others who have used your recipe to satisfy their own audiences. Feeding a cook's ego can be just as necessary as feeding his diner's stomachs.
Fan pages for cooking shows have their own recipe collections, often propagated by the chefs behind the shows but more often assembled by the fans. They'll use them to show off their mastery of the star's cooking techniques, or to show off their own versions of the show's recipes. The one-upmanship can be fun to read, and even more fun to cook.
Then there are the big food company sites, which have recipe sets often indexed solely by the names of the products used to make them. If you've got, say, a dozen cans of cream of celery soup that have accumulated in the back of your pantry, you'll appreciate having a base of recipes that will tell you how to get rid of them. That's good, because no one really eats cream of celery straight, do they?
The reasons keeping online recipes free are manifold, but all you need to know is that they are out there, waiting for you to explore them and make your own taste discoveries.
